MEET MARK BRIGGS, LMHCA

MARK’S STORYMark knew growing up that he wanted to be in a helping profession. After witnessing the ways that mental health influenced his loved ones, both negatively and positively, he was pointed in the direction of counseling. Post-graduation, he started his career in an inpatient clinic, working with folks who were struggling and in crisis, but felt that his impact was limited by the short length of stay and lack of rehabilitation focused activities. He decided to explore the outpatient sector and began working in a community mental health clinic. This is where he was shown how much mental health is affected by institutional factors and shifted his focus onto being involved and working towards positive change on a systemic level.
Mark sees his role of a counselor as providing understanding and empowerment to clients. He begins the therapy journey by helping the client map how their experiences have affected all aspects of their life, their value system, and their view of themselves. After the client feels more aware of how their past has affected them, the next step is helping the client to connect how the systems they live in contribute to their mental health. Mark finds this process to lead to more “ah-ha!” moments than other modalities he has experimented with.
Mark has personal and lived-in experience with many different mental health challenges including: Depression, Anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and PTSD/CPTSD. Because of this close connection, he has more than a clinical understanding of how these present different problems and hurdles for clients. He uses this personal experience in combination with his professional experience to create a well-rounded view of counseling.
Mark is a student at heart. If he won the lottery, he would most likely stay in school and learn as much as he can about anything that interests him from multiple other therapy modalities to performing arts to astronomy. This comes across in his counseling career as him always engaging in discourse, attending seminars, and trying to keep up with current research. The subjects he is currently focused on are: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, Somatic Therapy, and the connection between CPTSD and ADHD.
Life is far too difficult to handle alone. Even having someone that can sit, listen, and understand can build so much space for people. Mark wants to provide that space for people who are welcome to it and plans to tailor every session to what each specific client needs in that moment.
